CNUSD recognizes the importance of preparing students for the 21st century and is proud to offer the Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program at six elementary schools, two intermediate, and two high schools. This program affords students the opportunity to learn Spanish and English or Mandarin and English in a proficient manner. Students who participate in the Dual Language Immersion program from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through 12th grade become biliterate and develop an appreciation for multiculturalism. The program also prepares students with the college and career readiness skills they need to compete in a globalized society.
The Spanish program reflects the 90:10 model where the instructional day consists of 90% Spanish and 10% English in Kindergarten, increasing to 50% English and 50% Spanish by fifth grade. At the secondary level, instruction consists of approximately 30% Spanish and 70% English. Students committed to the full TK – 12 DLI program, achieve the greatest benefit of participating in the Dual Language Immersion program.
Rondo Elementary and Rosa Parks Elementary also have a Mandarin immersion program for native English speakers learning Mandarin. The program implements the 50:50 model in which 50% of the instructional day consists of English instruction and 50% is in Mandarin. This is currently K-6th program and will expand to be K-12th. The pathway begins at Rondo/Rosa Parks will feed to Ramirez Intermediate and conclude at Eleanor Roosevelt High School.
